I’m currently in year ten at Aquinas College and completing a school-based traineeship at HTG. This traineeship is allowing me to expand my experience in the workplace while certifying me with a Certificate III in Business. High school at Aquinas College has been an adventure meeting new people and discovering new horizons, but until this day my biggest adventure has been at HTG.
Warm welcome
I was welcomed with open arms when I first met the Operations teams, and instantly I felt like part of the family. It suddenly seemed obvious why this place had such a good vibe and I instantly noticed how they had won the Great Place to Work award.
Even as I was still learning everyone’s names and Rachel was helping me with my training booklet, I was already starting to find my fit in the team. By day two I had truly settled in! It’s fair to say the true meaning of family in this workplace is real.
A day in the life
Every Friday I come to work to receive a big welcome, then sit at my desk and help others with their daily work. Here’s my daily breakdown:
- I start the day at 8:30 with a quick meeting at 9 am discussing today’s plans usually followed by a game sometimes ping pong or a set of bang.
- At 9:30 two members of the team are responsible for preparing fresh fruit for morning tea. Fruity Friday, as it’s called, bringing everyone together for some yummy, wholesome food.
- 12:30 is lunch time – everyone eats lunch together and the afternoon is usually broken up with a game of trivia or ping pong.
Teamwork makes the dream work
Monty was the first person to help me out as she taught me how to check the status of her cases and correct them when necessary. Jaime and Chrissy then taught me how to review DOT cases and process them to the next stage, Tash showed me how to wrap the parcels and get them ready to be posted. We were all like a big family helping each other accomplish our tasks, and that’s what I think makes it such a great workplace.
I have been lucky enough to be working for HTG as they have taught me some things that I will never forget. They have helped me learn what it’s like when you finish school and the importance of being a part of a family.
For me, I know that it is the people I work with that create a great workplace and I’m sure all the other staff would agree. HTG has genuinely changed the way I look at things and helped me be motivated to get through my final years at school and out into the real world!
