How can you help your employee’s professional development?
As an employee, you want to invest in your company’s goals, get excited about their success, motivated to improve their products, services & processes used, contribute to the workplace culture and be an active part of your company community.
With this in mind, as an employee you are looking for a company that provide professional development programs, which will allow you to learn, develop and grow as an individual. Having professional development opportunities makes you feel valued and respected, so you can enhance your career and also balance it with your personal life.
There are a lot of ways to improve your employees experience and skill-set through professional development and here are my 9 main points below:
- Continuing their education
- Encouraging participation in professional organisations
- Research in their field
- Increasing responsibilities and duties
- Additional training
- Mentoring
- Access to industry resources
- Special projects or assignments
- Building a professional network
HTG has been constantly providing programs for professional development to its employees. Even as a remote worker, you should still be able to receive this development to help enhance your career and fulfilment. Below are some of the ways we’ve been able to develop with HTG:
1. Increasing responsibilities duties, additional training & mentoring
When I first started at HTG, I was an accounts payable officer. When you hear accounts payable, the simplest thing that will pop up in your mind is paying bills and invoices although this is not always the case. We provide financial, administrative and clerical support to the organisation. When we complete payments, we verify and reconcile data. Because of this, we are a huge contributor to our company by ensuring we don’t lose any money by paying in excess or any fraudulent activity.
Therefore, additional training, mentoring and support from the finance team has been an essential part of my job so I can be conscientious and efficient in what I do. I am constantly being trained in all of the changes and processes so I can apply it properly to what I do daily with the team.
After only a year, I was transferred from my accounts payable position to an accountant. The training and mentoring provided eased my transition so I could accept new responsibilities and duties.
2. Special projects or assignment
A normal workday will be spent 8 to 9 hours in front of the computer, looking at spreadsheets and answering emails. Repetitive tasks can sometimes make you feel complacent, as you become accustomed to doing things in a certain way or tasks flow a certain way and you can grow oblivious to work hazards that may present themselves.
When you have special projects or assignments, like writing this blog and updating process improvements, you became more aware and will look at how you do things in a new light. Fighting a false sense of security in the workplace can be a day-to-day challenge. Development programs will help provide your workers with skills, so you can remain aware, focused and respond with curiosity.
