Humble Beginnings and Successful Career Progression

Successful career progression always starts with humble beginnings. When talking about their careers, people often tell adventurous stories about their navigation through existential crisis into eventual self-discovery through “looking within.” However, laying solid career foundations doesn’t need the unnecessary complications. For Marketing Coordinator, Shane Deragopian, it all started with a phone call.

Shane remembers the call from the then manager of Telstra Store Burleigh Heads, Matt Ellems like it was yesterday. Despite Matt remembering the story a little differently, Shane insists that Matt was near desperate in his attempts to recruit him as a Sales Consultant. Four and a half years have flown by, and in that time Shane has progressed to be a part of the Business Development team, Retail Leadership team, completed his Bachelors of Management and Marketing, worked as a Marketing Assistant and progressed to Marketing Coordinator. All of this was made possible with self-motivation and the support and training of HTG.

During Shane’s 18 months at the Burleigh Heads Telstra Store, he grew his skills as a sales professional with the help of HTG’s commitment to continually develop their staff. Being a part of the Crown Retail Training Program helped him enhance his understanding of sales and the retail environment. Also being placed in a Business Acumen course, he was assisted in extending his customer base for both consumer and business customers.

Business Development Manager

Meeting his sales targets and breaking several records, Shane made a name for himself at Telstra Store Burleigh Heads and won several awards. Being such a smooth talker, he was then approached with the massive opportunity to join the Business Development team within HTG, where we was able to increase his customer base further and improve his negotiating skills.

Shane’s time as a Business Development Manager was interrupted by his decision to go back to University full-time and complete his studies. At the time he had his concerns as to how HTG would react, but he found HTG once again supportive in developing their staff and assisting with tough decisions. They even had a part-time role available for him at Telstra Store Helensvale while he saw through the end of his degree.

Retail Leadership Team

During his time at Telstra Store Helensvale, Shane worked his way up to a member of the Retail Leadership Team, where he managed and trained staff and assisted the Store Manager. His leadership skills were further supported by HTG who provided an Aspire course with Lead CI, as well as Ignite courses to develop an in-depth understanding of company values.

Marketing Coordinator

When Shane graduated with his Degree in Management and Marketing, HTG once again provided the opportunity to pursue a career in his chosen field. He started as a Marketing Assistant and worked his way up to Marketing Coordinator where he now conducts marketing campaigns for many of HTG’s business units. He’s aware that it sounds cliche, but every day presents a new and exciting challenge, and he wouldn’t be where he is today without the support and guidance of HTG.
